Can Amethyst Help with Managing Anxiety?

Welcome to another Amethyst blog post. I’m your anxiety advocate, Ginita Stone. Today, we’re diving into a beautiful purple crystal with the potential to bring some sweet relief to your anxiety — amethyst.

What is Amethyst?

Amethyst is a popular gemstone most often found in shades of purple and lilac. It is a form of quartz and, much like rose quartz, is believed to contain stress-relieving and anti-anxiety properties.

In the world of wellness, amethyst is considered a grounding stone. People often seek this crystal to help find balance in their lives and to quell their worrying minds.

But can it truly make a difference to your mental health?

    The Evidence

As always, we’re turning to the experts to understand the potential benefits of using amethyst to help manage anxiety.

In an excerpt from our You Can Heal Your Life Crystal Guardian, Margaret Ann Lembo points out that, ‘Amethyst has been used for centuries to help to provide balance, more patience, perseverance, and inner strength.” It has long since been associated with supporting your emotional state by bringing calm and clearing negativity.

And it’s not just anecdotal evidence that supports this claim. A 2013 study published by the European Journal of Integrative Medicine showed that amethyst had a significant effect on the symptoms of anxiety over a 60-day period.

Participants who were given amethysts to meditate with showed a considerable reduction in their anxiety levels compared to those who did not use the crystals during their meditation practices.

    How To Use Amethyst

If life has been feeling a little overwhelming of late, add a touch of amethyst to your everyday routine. We recommend wearing amethyst jewellery as a simple way to keep the crystal close to you and let it work its magic.

This can be an amethyst necklace, amethyst pendant, amethyst bracelet, or a stylish pair of amethyst earrings.

If you find you’re a little overcome with stress during the day, take a moment to practice a quick session of deliberate breathing with your amethyst piece. Find a quiet place, take a comfortable seat, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths.

Use the amethyst to find a point of focus and continue breathing deeply until you feel the sense of calm wash over you.

Can Amethyst Really Help with Anxiety Relief?

Below is the experience of one of my close friend.

Hey, my name is Carol and for most of my life I’ve struggled with anxiety. It’s been a long road of therapy, meditation, and medication, but I’ve finally reached a point where I’m able to manage my anxiety enough to function and to feel joy.

My love for crystals and especially understanding how amethyst and anxiety relief can connect first came during a particularly rough patch.

You see, I was in the midst of a full-scale panic attack, something my anxiety was throwing at me more and more frequently. I remember lying on the floor, trying to do all the breathing exercises my therapist had taught me, and willing myself to calm down, but it just wasn’t happening.

My medication was in the bedroom, but it felt like too far a trip to handle. I felt like I was stuck in that panic attack forever.

To be honest, I was terrified that I’d never be able to get out of it and that I’d spend the rest of my life in that state.

I didn’t reach for medication or call 911, but somehow I managed to reach for the piece of amethyst that I’d just bought online. It was a small amethyst point necklace.

I don’t know why it was the first thing I reached for, but in that moment everything just felt so incredibly dark and that piece of amethyst for anxiety relief just seemed to be the light that I needed to guide me out.

I held the necklace in my hand, closed my eyes, and continued my deep breathing.

I’d love to tell you that everything that I’d read about amethyst at that moment kicked in and cleared my mind of all the panic and all the negative thoughts. But it didn’t.

What did work was the fact that holding that piece of amethyst necklace gave me something to focus on. Instead of focusing on my worry and my fear, I focused on that deep, purple crystal and I told myself that it was going to help me through this.

I knew how much I wanted to get better in that moment and I was willing to try anything, including summoning the strength and the willpower that I didn’t think I had.

The panic attack didn’t instantly disappear, but the combination of the deep breathing, the focus, and the will that I’d managed to summon saw me come out of that panic attack much quicker than I ever had.

From that moment, I’ve always made sure that a piece of amethyst jewelry has been part of my anxiety toolkit.

Using Amethyst to Help with Anxiety

Carol’s story shows exactly why amethyst can be such a vital tool in our anxiety management kit. It provides a sense of focus and a pop of positivity that can often be needed when we feel ourselves slipping from a calm and balanced state of mind.

Whether you’re dealing with a full-blown panic attack or you can feel the stress and the tension starting to bubble over, using amethyst and finding a quick grounding technique can be the key to bringing that much-needed sense of calm and control back into your life.
