What does vacuuming mean?

For vacuuming, there are different types of vacuum cleaner, a hand-held vacuum cleaner, a cordless vacuum cleaner or a robotic vacuum cleaner.

The vacuum cleaner is primarily suitable for cleaning coarse and fine dirt. However, it is not suitable for absorbing moisture. The devices work with the use of suction power. They suck the dirt and debris, which are then transferred to a bag or a collection container.

How often should I vacuum?

There is no specific answer to this as it depends on a lot of different factors. Usually vacuuming every two to three days is sufficient for most households.

If you have children or pets, you may need to vacuum more frequently.

Why you need a good vacuum cleaner

Everyone prefers to keep the burden of household chores as low as possible. The cleaning floors, carpets, and upholstery can be hard and time-consuming without proper appliances. Fortunately, vacuum cleaners make sweeping by hand or even knocking out carpets a simple task. So you have more time for the important things in life.

In the meantime, a vacuum cleaner has become an integral part of every household. There are a variety of different types of vacuum cleaners available in the market.

In addition to conventional bag vacuum cleaners, you can also find bagless models on the market today. There are also models with special attachments for carpets or hard floor cleaning. These vacuum cleaners sometimes work with additional cleaning agents. You can easily wipe and vacuum at once.

The latest trend is the so-called vacuum cleaner robot. These take care of the cleaning and thus make this chore easier than ever.

Below we will mention all the essential criteria that you should consider to find the best vacuum cleaner.

Buyer’s guide to vacuum cleaners

In the following, you can find some product advice and all the important factors when buying a vacuum cleaner.

When buying a vacuum cleaner, consider the following in particular:

Which type of vacuum cleaner is right for you.

Vacuum cleaners differ in terms of the type of dust collection, the mode of operation and the design.

A classic style of vacuum cleaner is the canister vacuum cleaner. In this, you can move the body around the room using rollers. These types of vacuum cleaners are powerful and usually, their basic version is inexpensive.

Compact and portable vacuums are another type of vacuum cleaner which is also very popular. They are easy to use and are particularly suitable for places that are difficult to access.

Brush vacuum cleaners are a good alternative for users with carpeted floors. With them, you can clean carpets deeply and thoroughly.

Vacuum cleaners with or without a bag.

Devices with bags are often quieter and changing the bags is easier for allergy sufferers.

However, bagless models usually clean more efficiently. On top of that, there are no follow-up costs for the purchase of bags.

The performance of a vacuum cleaner determines the speed and efficiency of cleaning.

A distinction must be made between the power consumption and the actual suction power.

The power consumption describes how much electricity a device consumes. If possible, this should be less than 1,500 W (watts).

About the actual suction power, you should make sure that the model has at least 250 W. This is medium suction power.

Depending on the size of the room, you should choose models with a longer cord.

Vacuuming with the model which has a short power cord can be annoying as it does not cover the room efficiently. Especially when you are vacuuming large areas you may need to change the socket frequently.

For larger rooms, choose the model which has a power cord of at least 8 m.

For allergy sufferers, in particular, it is important to choose a model with a sophisticated filter system.

Finally, the air sucked in by the vacuum cleaner need to be discharged. However, this should be done without the sucked-in dust particles, mites, and other allergens.

You can recognize a high-quality vacuum cleaner by their several filter stages.

Vacuum cleaner types

Vacuum cleaners help in cleaning dirt and dust particles from various surfaces. The principle of operation is the same for all vacuum cleaners.

A fan operated by a motor generates a negative pressure. The resulting airflow sucks dirt and dust through the suction pipe into the device. A filter system then cleans the air enriched with dirt. This air flows through the motor for cooling.

The types of vacuum cleaners available on the market differ in terms of handling, cleaning results and price.

They can be classified according to the following aspects:

  • Dust collection method
  • Construction
  • Vacuum cleaner types based on the cleaning principle

Vacuum cleaner types using the dust collection method

The dust collection method has a significant impact on the efficiency and handling of the device.

There are 3 options for the type of dust collection.

In Short!

Bag vacuum cleaners collect the dust in a bag. You have to empty it at regular intervals.

Bagless vacuum cleaners, on the other hand, collect the dust in a container that you can remove for emptying.

Water vacuum cleaners suck up the polluted air into a water tank. The water filters out the dirt particles. Pour away the dirty water after each use.

Dust collection is only the first filter stage. Most models have additional filter levels.

Bag vacuum cleaners

Vacuum cleaners with bag catch the dirt in an air-permeable vacuum bag. The polluted air flows through the bag, thereby filtering and collecting the sucked-in dirt.

The bag can, therefore, be regarded as the first filter stage in the bag vacuum cleaner.

The effort of cleaning these models is low because you can simply remove a full bag, dispose of it in the household waste and replace it with a new one.

Most models of Bag vacuum cleaners have a medium to high suction power. However, the suction power decreases as the bag starts filling up.

This variant is suitable for all those who prefer simple cleaning of the vacuum cleaner. The simple bag change is particularly beneficial for allergy sufferers since it does not stir up any dust.

The basic version of bag vacuum cleaners is slightly cheaper than bagless vacuum cleaners. Bag vacuum cleaners can range from 30 to 3,000 dollars.

The big price difference is because of the quality construction, performance, and functions of the vacuum cleaner.

However, all bag vacuum cleaners have consequential costs: You have to purchase the bags regularly.

Benefits

Basic variants are inexpensive

Easy disposal of the dust

Suitable for allergy sufferers

Disadvantage

The subsequent cost of buying bags

Loss of suction when the bag is full

Bagless vacuum cleaners

With a bagless vacuum cleaner, the dust is absorbed into a built-in container.

The dirt particles in the vacuum cleaner are separated by the so-called cyclone principle.

The cleaning effort is slightly higher in comparison to models with dust bags. You must empty the dust collector regularly. This helps to avoid unpleasant smells.

Bagless vacuum cleaners also have medium to high suction power. With regular emptying of the dust collector, there is little or no loss of suction power.

Check out our recommendation of best bagless vacuum cleaners

There are 2 variants here:

  • Simple cyclone vacuum cleaner

The incoming air circulates in a conical container. This turbulence creates centrifugal forces that drive the dirt particles outwards.

The dirt separates from the air and finally collects into a container. However, single cyclone vacuum cleaners only filter coarser dirt particles. The finer ones have to be caught by a paper central filter.

  • Multi cyclone vacuum cleaner

These models have the same basic principle as a single cyclone vacuum cleaner. In the case of multi-cyclone suction devices, however, the process is repeated several times before the air escapes through additional cones. This way, the air is cleaned better and additional filter systems such as paper central filters are not necessary.

Bagless vacuum cleaners are suitable for anyone who wants to avoid the consequential costs for vacuum cleaner bags and the associated disadvantages. However, if you suffer from an allergy you must consider that you can come into contact with the dust while emptying the dust.

Bagless vacuum cleaners cost between 50 and 1,000 dollars. This means that the basic versions are cheap but somewhat more expensive than bag vacuum cleaners.

Benefits

No purchase costs for bags

Hardly any loss of suction power

Inexpensive basic variants

Disadvantage

Somewhat higher cleaning effort

Less suitable for allergy sufferers

Water vacuum cleaner

Water vacuum cleaners have an integrated water tank, which must be filled with water before each vacuuming. Water vacuum cleaners are different than wet vacuum cleaners.

Wet vacuum cleaners can absorb larger amounts of liquid, while water vacuum cleaners serve to remove dirt and dust particles.

In water vacuum cleaners, the polluted air goes into the water tank where water filters out the dirt particles. The exhaust air is almost clean.

Image Sorce: Amazon.com

When handling a water vacuum cleaner, please note that the contents of the water container must be emptied after each use. Otherwise, bacteria and mold can form.

However, regular washing out have significant advantages: Vacuum cleaners with water filters do not lose their performance. There is also no bad odor.

A disadvantage of these vacuum cleaners is the relatively high weight of the models. This makes maneuvering difficult.

Water vacuum cleaners are particularly recommended for allergy sufferers. The contact with potentially allergy-causing particles is less in comparison to bag vacuum cleaners and bagless vacuum cleaners.

The price range of water vacuum cleaners is usually between 100 and 400 dollars.

Benefits

Well suited for allergy sufferers

No need to buy bags

Disadvantage

Heavy

Vacuum cleaner types by construction

Vacuum cleaners consist of the following components, which can be arranged differently:

  • floor jets
  • casing
  • pipe
  • suction

The respective design determines the handling of the vacuum cleaner. Furthermore, the models vary significantly in their container volume due to their size and construction. This describes the maximum space available in the vacuum cleaner for the dust.

The container volume is measured in liters. In general, the larger the capacity, the less frequently you need to replace the dust bag or empty the dust container.

The following types of vacuum cleaner are available according to their construction:

  • Canister
  • Handheld vacuum cleaner
  • Backpack Vacuums
  • Vacuum cleaner robot
  • upright vacuum cleaner

Canister vacuum cleaners

There are usually 4 rollers under the housing of a cylinder vacuum cleaner, on which the device can move flexibly. The motor and a dust collecting container are usually built into the body.

This type is the most common vacuum cleaner variant.

The handling of cylinder vacuum cleaners is very easy.

They are suitable for large areas because thanks to their rollers they can be easily pushed through the room.

Image Sorce: Amazon.com

However, the design also has its disadvantages. The dependency on the power cable makes it difficult to reach certain corners. Here, a battery-operated model is much more comfortable. However, they are rarely found in this type of construction.

The volume of the container can fluctuate greatly with cylinder vacuum cleaners. It ranges from 0.2 l to 20 l. However, over 5 l are rather rare.

Cylinder vacuum cleaner’s advantage is there strong suction power. They have enough space in the housing for a large motor and are therefore usually more powerful than smaller models.

Cylinder vacuum cleaners are suitable for different floors such as carpets, tiles or hardwood. Anyone looking for a universal vacuum cleaner should consider this type of vacuum cleaner.

However, these models are not equipped with a sufficient brush roller for deep cleaning of carpets. This type of vacuum cleaners is rather impractical for vacuuming a car since they are usually big and needs an electrical outlet.

Since these types of vacuum cleaners are the most common model, there are a large number of models from different manufacturers.

The great competition means that canister vacuum cleaners are available at an affordable price. They are available from around 30 dollars. High-quality models with many functions can also cost up to 10,000 dollars.

Benefits

Comfortable handling

Suitable for large areas

Suitable for different floors

Inexpensive

Large selection

Disadvantage

Heavy housing can only be moved over the floor

Lack of manageability for car cleaning

Missing equipment for deep cleaning of carpets

Handheld vacuum cleaner

Handheld vacuum cleaners are very compact and space-saving. They are a small unit made up of a suction pipe, dust container and blower.

Some models have a longer suction tube, mostly they are telescopic tubes that can be pushed together and thus variably adjusted. They are often equipped with a practical holder handle.

Handheld vacuum cleaners advantage is its low weight. This ensures greater flexibility. These use either a battery or direct electric outlet as the power source. Battery-operated models are more common and offer more freedom of movement.

Image Sorce: Amazon.com

Handheld vacuum cleaners are mostly bagless and have a container volume of 0.15 l to 2.5 l.

The main disadvantage of handheld vacuum cleaners is their limited performance. They are not powerful enough to remove all dirt.

Also, they do not have an adequate filter system. The vacuum cleaners blow out up to 10% of the fine dust absorbed. Therefore, the models are only partially suitable for people with a dust allergy.

Handheld vacuum cleaners are often also called table and car vacuum cleaners. This is due to the area of application of these models. A handheld vacuum cleaner is ideal for quickly picking up crumbs or small dirt on small areas. They are also ideal for cleaning car seats. These models are also good for vacuuming in hard-to-reach places.

Handheld vacuum cleaners are more recommended as a second device or for small apartments. With these types of vacuum cleaners, you cannot replace a classic floor vacuum.

Handheld vacuum cleaners are priced between 10 and 500 dollars.

Benefits

Comfortable handling

Space-saving and compact

Suitable for hard-to-reach places

Good for car cleaning

Disadvantage

Weak suction power

Not suitable for allergy sufferers

Only suitable for small areas

Backpack Vacuum cleaners

The design of this type of vacuum cleaner device is kind of a backpack. Hence the name backpack vacuum cleaner.

The user can easily operate the model, as these models have a high degree of freedom of movement. Also, one hand is always free when working. The power is supplied either by battery or direst power outlet. A model with batteries enables additional mobility and optimizes freedom of movement.

The container volume can range from 4 l to 12 l and is therefore particularly high. This allows you to clean very large areas without the need to empty the container or replace the dust bag.

Image Sorce: Amazon.com

Backpack vacuum cleaners usually have a high performance. This is because they are designed for professional work

This type of vacuum cleaner model is ideal for areas with limited space. For example, they are a good solution for vacuuming stairs.

Since the models are also designed for professional use, they are also more expensive. A backpack vacuum cleaner usually costs between 150 and 800 dollars.

Benefits

Comfortable to use

One hand is always free

Disadvantage

A small selection of devices

Comparatively expensive

Vacuum cleaner robots

Vacuum cleaning robots are discus-shaped household robots that are designed for the independent cleaning of floors. They move through the living space autonomously on wheels. On the lower side of the robots are either rotating brushes or rollers with rubber wipers. These models are also called wiping robots.

Inexpensive entry-level models are equipped with collision sensors. If the robot vacuum cleaner encounters an obstacle, it changes its direction.

Most high-end models use ultrasound, infrared light, or laser to determine the distance to an object. Shortly before the battery is about to empty, the models go to the charging station with ultrasound.

Image Sorce: Amazon.com

The battery capacity of vacuum cleaner robots is up to 120 min. The models are therefore only suitable for 2 to 3 rooms in one charge.

Shopping tip

Vacuum robots with time programming are particularly advantageous!

Most of the robot vacuum cleaners are bagless. The container volume usually ranges from 0.1 l to 1.2 l. High-quality models usually dispose of the dust independently in the charging station. You can then simply empty and wipe the dust collection container.

The performance of a vacuum cleaner robot cannot be compared to that of a conventional vacuum cleaner. Nevertheless, they are sufficient for everyday life.

Vacuum robots are suitable for hard floors and carpets. Mopping robots also perform wet floor mopping work. High-end models have special sensors and recognize whether it is a carpet or hard floor. They, therefore, avoid the wiping function on carpets.

Vacuum cleaning robots are ideal for those users who have little time for housework. Even for older people and people with physical limitations, this is a simple and energy-saving solution to keep the floors clean.

Vacuum robots are priced between 50 and 2000 dollars.

Benefits

Works autonomously

Great time savings

Ideal for people with physical limitations

Disadvantage

Weak suction power

Only suitable for apartments with up to 4 rooms

Upright vacuum cleaner

Upright vacuums or stick vacuums are characterized by their elongated design.

The models stand upright during operation. Body and suction tube form one unit. The dust is collected in a vacuum cleaner bag or an integrated container using cyclone technology. The suction nozzles rest on the floor.

The handling of an upright vacuum cleaner is gentle on the back since you do not have to bend over to operate it.

You can simply slide the model in front of you. Sometimes there are even small rollers on the underside, which makes handling even easier.

Image Sorce: Amazon.com

The effort required to maneuver the device is much less than that of a traditional vacuum cleaner. They have a high degree of mobility and can also be used for places that are difficult to access.

The dust absorption potential is comparatively less: the container volume ranges from 0.25 l to 3 l and is usually less than 1.5 l.

The performance of the models is rather low. This is especially true for the battery-powered variant. Upright vacuums are therefore more suitable as a second device.

Stand vacuum cleaners are priced from 30 dollars. However, they can cost up to 800 dollars.

Benefits

Low purchase price

Great mobility due to low weight

Battery operation allows flexibility

Disadvantage

Low performance

Power Supply for vacuum cleaners

The type of power supply determines the handling and mobility of the model. It also has an immediate impact on performance. You can choose between the battery and direct electric power models.

Both energy sources have their advantages and disadvantages.

Shopping tip

If you want to benefit from both advantages, choose a model with hybrid technology.

Battery

Vacuum cleaners with batteries ensure high mobility. The device is independent of an external power source. A vacuum cleaner with a battery is ideal for vacuuming in hard-to-reach places.

When buying, it should be noted that there are different types of batteries. The battery composition influences the battery performance. This means that there is a loss of capacity with frequent partial discharge.

The following 2 variants are common:

Lithium-ion battery (Li-ion battery)

This has become the standard for batteries. The advantage is that it is very powerful. Li-ion batteries have a higher energy density.

They have a lifespan of 500 charging cycles, almost 25% more than NiMH batteries.

Furthermore, batteries with this composition do not break when heated.

NiMH battery (nickel-metal hydride battery)

This battery is now rare in vacuum cleaners. The service life is approx. 400 charging cycles.

A nickel-metal hydride battery is also not as heat-resistant.

The battery life varies considerably. It can range from 10 minutes to 120 minutes. The longer the battery life, the longer you can operate the device continuously. The charging time usually takes several hours.

A disadvantage of cordless vacuum cleaners is that they usually have a lower output than direct electric outlet powered models. They are more recommended as a second device.

The big advantage is independence from an electrical outlet.

Direct power supply

These vacuum cleaner models need a direct electric power socket. The range of action of the models is correspondingly restricted.

These types of vacuum cleaners are more common than models with battery. They also offer significant advantages.

The performance is better and you can use it continuously for a long time. Models with direct electric power are therefore suitable for long period use.

The range of cleaning with this type of vacuum cleaner is limited. It is defined by the total length of the power cord and the vacuum cleaner together with the suction hose or suction pipe.

The radius of action determines the maximum distance the vacuum cleaner can be from the socket. The manufacturers usually state this on the packaging or in the description if you buy online.

Room size  Recommended radius of action
9 m 2 5 m
16 m 2 7 m
20 m 2 10 m

The efficiency of vacuum cleaner

A vacuum cleaner should not only clean thoroughly but also work as efficiently as possible. Depending on the model, the dust collection performance or the power consumption differ.

It is an industry-standard to use energy labels for vacuum cleaners. These are intended for consumer protection. This enables users to better compare vacuum cleaners in terms of energy, cleaning efficiency and environmental friendliness.

You should pay particular attention to the following aspects regarding the efficiency of a vacuum cleaner:

Power consumption

The power consumption describes how much electricity a device consumes. It is therefore advisable to pay attention to a low wattage here.

Vacuum cleaners with a maximum of 900 Watts can be considered particularly energy-saving.

Energy efficiency class

The energy efficiency class describes the relationship between performance and power consumption. The higher the power and the lower the power consumption, the better the energy efficiency class.

This currently extends on a scale from A to G. Class A devices have the best energy efficiency and Class G devices the worst.

Hard floor cleaning class

The hard floor cleaning class measures how well the vacuum cleaner copes with smooth floors. Hard floors include, for example, laminate, floorboards, parquet or tiles.

Here too there is a scale from A (best) to G (worst). A class A vacuum cleaner absorbs 100% of the dirt under standardized operations. The value drops by 3% per class.

Carpet cleaning class

The cleaning class for carpets shows how well a vacuum cleaner cleans a standard carpet. Here too the scale ranges from A to G.

For class A, the vacuum cleaner has to clean 91% of the dust on the standard carpet. The value drops by 4% per class.

Dust emission class

The dust emission class measures how much dust is in the exhaust air. It ranges from A (best) to G (worst).

In class A, the airflow is allowed to release a maximum of 0.02% of the sucked-in dust back into the room.

In class G the value is over 1%.

Accessories

The equipment of a vacuum cleaner determines its added value and the price of the device.

The following aspects should be considered when buying a vacuum cleaner:

  • Brushes and nozzles
  • Filter
  • Cable rewind
  • Furniture protection

Brushes and nozzles

A vacuum cleaner is usually supplied with different nozzles. Additional brushes and nozzles enable efficient dust and dirt removal in poorly accessible areas.

We have put together the most important brushes and nozzles for you and specified their purpose.

However, the manufacturer’s designations can sometimes differ.

Filter

When buying a vacuum cleaner, you should make sure that it is equipped with good filters.

These ensure that the vacuum cleaner can work trouble-free. A good filter system is also important for allergy sufferers.

Vacuum cleaners can be equipped with the following filters:

Blow-out filter

A blow-out filter usually consists of fine non-woven material and thus picks up even the finest particles. With such a fine dust filter, the air is cleaned again before exiting.

This means that the particles that have already been sucked up are not released into the environment with the blown-out air.

HEPA filter

A standard in most devices is the so-called HEPA filter. This is also known as the “High-Efficiency Particulate Airfilter”.

This filter ensures that even the smallest particles can be filtered. The higher the class, the more fine dust remains in the device.

Hygiene filter

A hygiene filter works very similarly to a HEPA filter. However, it itself absorbs spores from the air.

Pollen allergy sufferers, for example, benefit significantly from this. Hygiene filters are usually washable.

Microfilter

Microfilter can convince with a high filter performance. They can attract and vacuum dust grains employing electrical charging.

Even the smallest particles are quickly absorbed.

Motor filter

A motor filter serves to protect the motor. If particles get caught in the engine, this can lead to damage.

A motor filter usually consists of fleece. This can intercept all dirt particles that would otherwise get into the fan of the engine.

Cable rewind

The automatic cable rewind is an important feature. The manufacturers offer different solutions for this.

There are two options:

Roller

This technology is used in the majority of vacuum cleaners. In this when you pull the cable firmly, it is drawn in automatically.

In some models, the mechanism works a little more loosely. For this purpose, it is recommended to read user reviews.

Cable pull

A cable pull button is convenient as in this the power cable rolls up with the push of a button.

The cable winder is a sensitive mechanism.

Furniture protection

A furniture protection strip ensures that the vacuum cleaner is edged with soft plastic.

If there is an accidental collision with a piece of furniture, the furniture protection strip acts as a shock absorber.

This prevents possible scratches on furniture and damage to the device.

Shopping tip!

Especially with a cylinder vacuum cleaner and a robot vacuum cleaner, a furniture protection strip should be regarded as the minimum standard.

Features

The range of functions of a vacuum cleaner has a direct influence on the operation and performance of the device.

The functions optimize ease of use or ensure that operations run smoothly.

The following functions are possible:

Filter change indicator

Many vacuum filters cannot be used permanently and must, therefore, be replaced regularly. If you do not replace it, the filter will no longer work effectively.

Devices with a filter change indicator are suitable to match the right time. A sensor detects when which filter is no longer fully functional and informs you via a display when it should be changed.

Dust Level indicator

You can check how filled your dust bag or dust collector on a level indicator.

With them, you do not have to check the bag or container yourself.

Suction power regulation

Depending on the manufacturer, vacuum cleaners have mechanical or electronic suction power regulation. The mechanical suction power regulation must be set by the user himself. This can be found on most models.

The electronic suction power regulation adapts automatically to the surface and thus the vacuum regulates itself. This variant is used for rather high-priced devices. The power consumption can be reduced by regulating the suction power.

Overheating protection and automatic switch-off

Overheating protection or automatic switch-off ensures that the vacuum cleaner switches itself off in the event of an overload.

In this way, overheating of the motor and associated damage can be avoided.

Clogging indicator

A clogging indicator informs you as soon as something gets caught in the intake manifold.

In this case, you can switch off the device immediately and clear the pipe of the blockage.

Noise level

Vacuuming is an unpopular activity for many people. One of the reasons is the high noise factor.

The noise emission is given in dB (decibels). For most vacuum cleaners, it can be between 30 decibels and 90 decibels.

Note!

A difference of 10 dB is perceived by the human ear as a doubling of the volume. The law stipulates that hearing protection must be worn at work for devices over 85 dB.

Experts recommend buying the vacuum cleaner which has a noise level of less than 75 dB

However, many manufacturers now offer quieter devices. A comparatively quiet vacuum cleaner has a noise level below 65 dB. Devices with a maximum of 60 dB are ideal.

At this volume, you can still have a normal conversation while vacuuming!

Frequently asked questions

In this section, we have put together for you what you should know about using a vacuum cleaner.

Our FAQ area is based on questions from other users.

What should allergy sufferers look for when choosing a vacuum cleaner?

When choosing a vacuum cleaner, there are a few points to consider for allergy sufferers:

Type of dust collection

Concerning the dust collection method, you should choose a model with a bag or water filter. The contact with dust is significantly minimized in both models.

In the case of a bagless model, it can be difficult for allergy sufferers to empty the dust container.

Filter system

Additional filters in the vacuum cleaner clean the exhaust air. Allergy sufferers should choose a model with a HEPA and/or hygiene filter.

These clean the exhaust air even from the finest particles, pollen, and mites.

Dust emission class

The newly introduced dust emission class enables the user to better compare how efficiently the filter system works.

An allergy sufferer should ideally choose a vacuum cleaner with dust emission class A. This means that the exhaust air has less than 0.02% emission particles.

How do I know which bags I need for my vacuum cleaner?

It is relatively easy to find the right bag. All you need is the exact model name of the vacuum cleaner.

Manufacturers and dealers usually provide a list. You can use this to compare which vacuum cleaner bag you need for your model.

Different bag providers offer you the opportunity to conveniently enter your vacuum cleaner model online and thus find the right bag.

How do I know that I need to change the vacuum cleaner bag?

The frequency of changes depends on several factors: The decisive factor is how often and on which surface you vacuum.

On average, you have to change the bag every 4 to 6 weeks, but at the latest after 3 months.

An overfilled bag harms the suction power and hygiene of the vacuum cleaner. Ideally, you should check the level of the vacuum cleaner bag after each vacuuming process.

The following table provides an idea:

Size of the apartment

Change interval

50 m 2

Every 2 to 3 months

100 m 2

Every month

When do I have to change the filter in the vacuum cleaner?

Additional filter systems ensure a trouble-free process. For optimal results, it is advisable to change all replaceable filters at least twice a year and if there is visible contamination.

Some filters are also permanent. These can often be washed out. This should also be done at least twice a year.

How does a vacuum cleaner work?

The principle of a vacuum cleaner is very simple. The heart is the engine. This creates a vacuum using a blower. The dirt particles and dust are sucked in by the vacuum.

These are separated from the air and captured. A filter also ensures clean exhaust air.

Vacuum cleaners vary in their technology and way of working. The so-called cyclone technology was a small revolution. This creates such a strong vortex in the device that dust and dirt are thrown out of it and collected in a container.

What distinguishes a bag vacuum cleaner from a bagless vacuum cleaner?

Bag vacuum cleaners and bagless vacuum cleaners differ in the type of dust collection.

Bag vacuum cleaner

These models collect dust and dirt in a bag. This must be emptied regularly.

If the bag is too full, it may result in the loss of suction.

Bagless vacuum cleaners

With bagless vacuum cleaners, the dust is collected in a collecting container. You can empty it after each use and thus avoid unpleasant odors and loss of suction power.

The disadvantage, however, is that allergy sufferers are exposed to potential allergens when emptied.

How can I remove unpleasant smells in the vacuum cleaner?

In addition to dust and dirt, mites, bacteria, and other microorganisms collected in the vacuum cleaner.

These can produce unpleasant smells in the dust collector and suction pipe.

You should regularly carry out the following measures to eliminate or avoid odors:

  • Replace the bag or empty the dust collector.
  • In the case of a bagless model, you must also regularly wipe out the dust collector.
  • Remove the suction pipe and rinse it with a hot water jet.
  • It should then dry well.
  • In the meantime, leave the body open and ventilate it.

Where can I buy cheap vacuum cleaners?

Depending on the model and version, vacuum cleaners are available online at a very low cost.

Cylinder vacuum cleaners are available from 30 dollars, hand vacuum cleaners even from 15 dollars.

What does a good vacuum cleaner cost?

Inexpensive vacuum cleaners are available for less than 50 dollars. These models often only have basic equipment. Some of the cheaper models also have high power consumption.

If you rarely vacuum and only need to work in a small area, inexpensive devices are a good alternative. These are also recommended as a second vacuum.

For regular vacuum needs, it is necessary to invest at least 100 dollars or more. The models should have good suction power and are also better equipped.

How many watts should a vacuum cleaner have?

Manufacturers use to advertise with a high wattage and also report this as the performance of the device.

However, this is only the power consumption, not the power. Accordingly, the wattage only indicates power consumption and should, therefore, be rather low.

The following parameters are available to measure the actual cleaning performance:

The cleaning class for hard floors indicates how well the vacuum cleaner copes with hard floors.

Cleaning class for carpets measures how well a vacuum cleaner cleans a standard carpet.

The dust emission class measures how much dust is in the exhaust air.

Which vacuum cleaner is right for me?

Depending on the needs and conditions in the household, different product types are recommended.

Small apartments

In small apartments with little dirt, small cylinder vacuum cleaners are a good solution. These are easy to use and can be stowed away to save space.

Pay attention to a suction power of at least 200 W. Suitable models usually cost between 30 and 100 dollars. For small apartments, even handheld vacuums or upright vacuums are an alternative. They have a very compact design, but also a poorer performance.

Make sure that the battery life is at least 30 minutes.

Multi-person households

High-performance canister vacuum cleaners with variable suction power are recommended for multi-person households. The suction power should be at least 250 W and on different surfaces.

These models usually cost between 150 and 300 dollars and can often come with the number of accessories.

If you prefer a compact vacuum cleaner you can also consider buying an upright vacuum cleaner.

This should have a battery life of at least 1 hour. Powerful upright vacuum cleaners are priced between 170 and 300 dollars.

Pet owners

Pet owners should choose a vacuum cleaner with high performance and a good filter system. This means that all animal hair is well removed and particles are not released into the exhaust air.

There should also be an absorbent brush. These include turbo nozzles and brush rollers. These models cost between 150 to 300 dollars.

Homeowners

In a house, you should invest in a vacuum cleaner with an electric brush. The purchase price can be between 200 and 500 dollars.

Back vacuum cleaners are an alternative. These are easy to use. Furthermore, these models are not so bulky on stairs. For a good back vacuum, you have to invest 250 to 700 dollars.

Busy people or people with physical disabilities

If you have little time for housework or if you have problems vacuuming due to physical restrictions, vacuum robots are a good alternative.

These do the suction work autonomously. They cost between 200 and 2,000 dollars.

How good are vacuum cleaner robots?

Vacuum robots are a convenient relief for everyday life. The models are practical household help especially for busy people and people with physical limitations.

However, the suction power and performance varies. This can often be recognized by the purchase price, which can range from 100 to 2,000 dollars.

In most cases, the more a device costs, the more extensive the equipment and the better the suction power.

Cheap models up to 150 dollars can often not keep up with more expensive models in terms of suction power. The suction result on hard floors is usually satisfactory, but carpets are often poor.

The cheap devices often leave up to half of the dust here. The navigation is often worse. No high-quality sensors are installed in these models.

In the medium price range of up to 500 dollars, the performance is often somewhat better.

You can get the full range of functions from around 700 dollars. These devices maneuver independently between chairs and tables and also clean the corners thoroughly.

Cleaning is satisfactory on both carpeted and wooden floors. Navigation takes place using high-quality laser sensors or cameras.
